Why Choose Our International High School in Pozuelo, Madrid?

Families choose our Sixth Form in Madrid for its proven outcomes, breadth of pathways, and quality of provision. Founded in 1940, we are the oldest British high school in Madrid and have achieved four consecutive “Excellent” ratings across all areas in British Schools Overseas inspections.

The flexibility of three Sixth Form routes allows students to align their interests and strengths with their university goals without limiting future options. A dedicated university counselling team supports students with subject selection, applications, SATs, personal statements, and interview preparation, including Oxbridge and US admissions. As a result, 100% of our students progress to university.

With a low teacher-to-student ratio and specialist facilities, students benefit from individual attention as well as strong academic and personal development. Music remains a key part of Sixth Form life, supported by our ABRSM Partner School status—the first in Spain—alongside opportunities to develop proficiency in five languages and to enhance talents in sport, STEM, and the arts.

University Destinations and Alumni Success

Our high school graduates go on to universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, and LSE in the UK, alongside top destinations in the US, including MIT, Stanford, Yale, and UCLA. They also progress to prestigious Spanish universities such as Carlos III, Autónoma de Madrid, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Navarra, and ESADE.

Our students’ academic excellence is also recognised externally. The school has been awarded a Mención Honorífica by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid for outstanding PAU results, with many of our students ranking among the top 100.

Beyond university, our alumni progress to successful careers across fields such as business, engineering, medicine, law, and the arts. Notable alumni include scientists, CEOs, politicians, pilots and Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz—reflecting the ambition and global outlook fostered throughout the school.

These outcomes are supported by excellent teaching, personalised guidance, and a clear focus on university readiness from an early stage.

High School Programme

When exploring the best high schools in Pozuelo, parents often focus on Sixth Form qualifications. All of our pathways lead to widely respected high school diplomas—BiBac®, Cambridge International A Levels, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma—allowing families to find the right balance of breadth, specialisation, language, and university access.

We begin guiding students early, ensuring they understand how each route works before making a decision. We also help them evaluate the opportunities available through each option, and how it aligns with their strengths, learning style, and aspirations. Subject choices within each pathway are supported by experienced teachers and tutors, alongside a dedicated university guidance team.

From Year 12, students at our international high school in Madrid transition to a more mature, university-style approach to learning. Through small classes and expert support, they develop the skills to manage their time, conduct independent research, communicate effectively, set clear targets, and act on feedback. They are also guided to build arguments, analyse unfamiliar material, and think critically—key skills for future success.

Our approach reflects university-level expectations, with structured lessons, rigorous discussion, and clear academic targets. This ensures students are well prepared not only for high-stakes assessments, but also for the demands of higher education.

High School Pathways | Sixth Form

BiBac® is the distinctive bilingual high school pathway offered by El Colegio Británico – Bachillerato, designed to support access to both Spanish and international universities. Students can study up to 70–75% of subjects in English, with the remainder in Spanish, building academic fluency in both languages.

Students choose one of three branches: Social Sciences and Humanities; Science and Technology (Engineering and Architecture); or Science and Technology (Health Sciences). The programme aligns closely with Spanish university entrance requirements (PAU), while also supporting international applications. Students develop a strong bilingual and bicultural academic profile—an advantage for competitive degrees, personal statements, and university-level study.

It provides strong preparation for UK universities and is widely recognised by leading institutions across Europe and globally.

High School Assessment

Assessment at our Sixth Form College in Pozuelo, Madrid, serves two important purposes: preparing students for their final external examinations and providing frequent, meaningful feedback that clearly shows what to improve next. Throughout the senior years, we prioritise regular checkpoints, clear grading criteria, and structured revision support so that no student is left to navigate expectations alone.

On the BiBac® route, students are assessed through a combination of ongoing coursework and the Spanish university entrance process (PAU). This ensures they are fully prepared for applications to Spanish universities, while continuing to develop strong academic English proficiency for international university pathways.

On the iA-level route, assessment is aligned with subject-specific external examinations, supported by structured internal testing, timed practice, and focused exam technique.

For the planned IBDP route, assessment will follow the IB model, combining external exams and core components with moderated coursework.

Language Immersion in High School

At our bilingual high school in Madrid, immersion in languages is central to how students learn, think, and present themselves academically. Teaching is delivered in a balanced bilingual environment, with approximately 80% in English and 20% in Spanish, ensuring students develop confidence and academic fluency in both languages. In Sixth Form, this is further strengthened through the BiBac® pathway, where students can choose the language of study for a significant proportion of their subjects.

Students typically achieve strong English outcomes, often reaching C1 or C2 level, and are well prepared for external qualifications such as IELTS. Additional languages include French and German, with preparation for DELF/DALF and Goethe examinations, and Mandarin is available as an extracurricular option. This focus on academic bilingualism and recognised certifications ensures students can write, analyse, and communicate effectively—an essential advantage for university entry and international opportunities.
